General, or General Snus (before 1999), is a snuff brand manufactured by Swedish Match. General is Sweden’s most popular snus brand, 74 million cans of General in Sweden were sold in 2002. [source needed] The snus is marketed both as loose snus and portion snus.
The recipe for General was first developed by the company Körner & Boman (later J. A. Boman & Co), but in 1915 the state AB Swedish Tobacco Monopoly took over the recipe. The snuff contains tobacco, salt and flavorings, including bergamot oil. The name General has nothing to do with the military service general without general in this case means “general” or “general”. During the 19th century, it was common for tobacco traders to call their standard standard snuff “general snuff”, ie “general snuff”.
General was launched in 1866, but it could be said that the story began four years already earlier. Snus manufacturer Johan A Boman’s goal was to produce what he called “the perfect snuff” and for four years the development work was underway. He traveled around the world hoping to find the best tobacco leaves and began experimenting with different combinations. The result was a tobacco blend of 22 different tobacco grades, with a drop of bergamot oil added. TASTE Generals tobacco blend with tones of tea, hay and leather gives a snuff with a spicy tobacco flavor in the base. What gives General its final touch is a drop of bergamot oil – the bergamot is a citrus fruit grown mainly in Italy and northern Africa. Following Boman’s instructions, only the finest parts of the tobacco plant are used, the stalk is avoided and the tobacco is dried in direct sunlight. DEVELOPMENT Even today, only a few people are familiar with Boman’s basic recipe from 1866. With great respect for that legacy, we have developed new products, and today there is a varied range of General products in both Sweden and other countries. Our latest interpretation is G.4 – all white pills, with the same kind of texture and feel as traditional white snuff, but without a trace of tobacco flavor. If you prefer a snuff with a clear whiskey flavor, there is also General Mackmyra, flavored with Mackmyra’s Swedish malt whiskey Swedish Oak.
