Swedish snus. A long-lasting love for Swedes, the beloved Snus. It has been a major part of Swedish culture for close to 500 years. Swedish snus most famous brand is General snus. It´s been the number one Swedish snus brand since it was launched back in 1866. Originally, Swedish snus was used in loose format. The tobacco pouches were invented in the 1970´s by SWEDISH MATCH, the leading snus manufacturer in Sweden. Soon, the tobacco pouches were the most preferred way to use Swedish snus.
What is Swedish snus?
Swedish snus is a moistened fine-grained smokeless tobacco with added salts and water. It often has a distinct and clear taste of tobacco and are often flavored with spices or other flavor enhancers. Swedish snus is a spit-free, dip-free and no-need to chew smokeless tobacco!
Swedish snus formats
As previous mentioned, tobacco portion pouches were introduced in the 1970´s. They became very popular and took Swedish snus into the offices and boardrooms. Soon different sizes of tobacco pouches were developed. Today, you can find Swedish snus in large portion, original portion, slim portion, mini portion sizes. Some prefer a very discreet portion pouch while others prefer a full-sized tobacco portion pouch.
Swedish snus styles
Loose snus
Loose snus looks the same today as it did 200 years ago and is still the basis of the Swedish snus tradition. You bake the prilla yourself to the desired shape and size and the prilla, then gives a quick and powerful taste experience. The snus is made from ground tobacco, which is available in three varieties: coarse, medium and fine-grained.
Original portion
In the 1970’s, the demand for snus arose in pre-packaged portions, which led to the development of Original Portion. The tobacco is portion-packed and then moistened. Original portions are moist on the surface, dark in color and, like loose snus, give a quick taste and nicotine experience. Often called regular portion snus. The first brand on the market, Tre Ankare, is still produced.
White portion
In 1998, Swedish Match launched the White Portion variant, also called white portion snus or White Portion, which, unlike Original Portion, is not moisturized and thus flows less. Also consists mostly of tobacco, but is drier on the surface and with a moist content. This gives a snus with a slower, but smoother taste and nicotine experience than regular portion snus.
All White portion
All White, or Helvit Portion consists of a mixture of cellulose and a smaller proportion of tobacco than in traditional snus. The smaller proportion of tobacco combined with the all-white bag contributes to the prills being whiter than White Portion. The portions are completely dry, which means that it can take a few seconds before the nicotine effect and taste are experienced by the user.
How to use Swedish snus?

Step #2 Open the can and bake your prilla (loose Swedish snus) or take out the tobacco pouch
Step #3 Put the baked prilla or tobacco pouch – put it under your upper lip
Step #4 Keep the snus under your upper lip 30-40 minutes
Step #5 Take out the prilla or tobacco pouch
How long you keep the Swedish snus in under the lip depends on your own preference.

Is Swedish snus safe?
In a large scale Swedish study from KI, it is believed that there is no connection between snus and oral cancer. Normal snus can even have a counteracting effect, according to the report. Grov snus – Strong tobacco taste
The spine in Grov snus is a tobacco character that is dark and clear. For those of you who use loose snus – unlike portions – it is even easier to recognize when the snus is coarsely ground, unlike ordinary loose snus which is almost always finely ground. The story of Grov snus began as early as 1840 with Willhelm Hellgren, who with his factory in central Stockholm quickly became one of the competitors to the largest snus manufacturer of the time, Jacob Fredrik Ljunglöf, founder and manufacturer of our most traditional snus Ettan. And just like Ettan, Grovsnus is one of Sweden’s oldest snus brands, registered as early as 1872.
Ettan snus
Strong, slightly smoky and with an unseasoned tobacco taste. When Ettan snus was introduced in 1822, the foundation was laid for today’s Swedish snus.
The ingredients are simple – tobacco, salt and water. And so it has been since Jacob Fredrik Ljunglöf launched his snus mixture “Ettan” in 1822. In the cardboard cones the snus was delivered – this was long before the snus box had been invented – there was a mixture with an unseasoned tobacco flavor that spread quickly throughout the country. With tones of smoke and malt, as well as slightly dark chocolate, we today give the pure tobacco taste a certain weight, but without taking over the experience of Ettan’s characteristic tobacco taste.
General Snus – best brand ever?
General’s tobacco blend with notes of tea, hay and leather gives a snus with a spicy tobacco taste in the base. What gives General snus its final touch is a drop of bergamot oil – bergamot is a citrus fruit that is mainly grown in Italy and northern Africa. According to Boman’s instructions, only the finest parts of the tobacco plant are used, the stem is avoided and the tobacco is dried in direct sunlight.
Even today, only a few people know of Boman’s basic recipe from 1866. With great respect for that heritage, we have developed new products, and today there is a varied range of General Products both in Sweden and other countries. Our latest interpretation is G.4 – completely white prills, with the same type of texture and feel as traditional snus in White format, but completely without traces of tobacco taste. If you prefer a snus with a clear whiskey taste, there is also General Mackmyra, flavored with Mackmyra’s Swedish malt whiskey Swedish Oak.
G 3 snus
Swedish Match´s developers had a mission: to develop a serving snus with new and improved properties, but with General’s basic character. The result was G.3, which in all its simplicity stands for Generation 3 by General. The G.3 series is available in two formats, Slim and Super Slim. Both have a narrower prill compared to the classic portions, for an optimized and discreet fit. The prills flow minimally, and have a higher nicotine strength than General Classic White and Classic Portion. The spicy tobacco mixture gives a taste that is recognizable from ordinary General snus Products, with hints of bergamot oil that gives the snus a certain acidity.
XR snus
You probably recognize the flavors in the XR series. It consists of variants of some of our most used flavors. Whether it’s General’s spicy tobacco character with hints of bergamot, or the juniper and lavender tones in Gothenburg’s Rapé, the basic character is there. What distinguishes the XR series is the slim prill. It is a little narrower than Swedish Match regular portions, for an optimized fit under the lip. Thanks to new technology, snus also tastes longer, while the portion flows less compared to our other portion products.
G 4 Snus – GENERATION 4 FROM GENERAL
Just over 150 years ago, General snus came as a loose snus. In the 1980’s came General’s second generation, the portion snus. G.3, which was launched in 2014, was the third generation, with higher strength and prills in the Slim format for lower flow and an optimized fit. Now it´s the time for G.4 – the fourth generation of snus from General snus and the latest step we have taken in the development of the snus of the future. Slim All White Snus users are increasingly demanding whiter products, but do not want to give up the traditional snus experience. Thanks to new technology, we have with G.4 been able to produce completely white prills, with the same type of texture and feel as traditional snus in White format, but completely without a trace of tobacco taste. We call this format All White. Due to a composition of fiber and a small proportion of light tobacco, G.4 is an all-white snus before, during and after use. Prillan has a soft fit, low flow and delivers a similar nicotine experience as a traditional snus in White format from Swedish Match. The prill is also in Slim format, which gives a long, narrow but large prill for an optimized fit under the lip.
Göteborgs Rapé – Swedish snus blue collar snus
It is no mystery where Gothenburg Rapé originated. And if the name is not enough, it is also possible to calculate in a different way if you know your snus history – in the past, all kinds of Swedish snus manufactured in Gothenburg had blue cans. Gothenburg Rapé has been around since 1919 and is today one of our most recognized flavors. However, the story behind Gothenburg’s Rapé goes back even further. Already in the 1850s, the ports were a central place where local trends resulted in different snus mixtures. Swedish sailors collected ingredients during their long voyages on the seven seas, which then resulted in snus mixtures that also spread ashore. The Swedish sailors had a passionate relationship with their Swedish snus and the saying was: “The mood of a sailor is as good as the quality of his snus”. One of these mixtures was the origin of Gothenburg Rapé, which got its name when Swedish the tobacco monopoly took over all snus production in Sweden in 1915. It was not until 1919 that Göteborgs Rapé was registered as a separate trademark. “Rapé” is a French term meaning “torn” – something that the tobacco in snus was from the beginning. Today, Gothenburg Rapé contains just like most common varieties of ground tobacco.
JAKOBSSONS SNUS
When there were many redundancies at Henrik Jakobsson’s job in the early 2000s, he began to think about new business ideas. The trend of taste experiences in food had just picked up speed and as an avid snus user, he reflected on the lack of innovation in the snus market. Why did snus only taste like snus? Snus could also taste, among other things, fruit, berries and spices. He soon decided to create a snus that would not only contain well-selected tobacco varieties but also offer the customer something more, an experience. An idea that was formed into a goal-oriented investment that ultimately resulted in the brand Jakobsson’s – a flavored premium Swedish snus from Gotand. Jakobsson’s from Gotlandssnus is handcrafted hand in hand with the latest technology in the factory in Roma on Gotland. The raw materials are of the absolute best variety and the tobacco varieties are carefully selected and refined. Jakobsson’s is available in a large variety of flavors and the quality is clearly noticeable in both aroma, strength and taste.
