The 1960s are a time of change for snus in many ways. The monopoly had outlived itself in the increasingly globalized market that was now emerging. In 1961 the company changed its name to Svenska Tobaks AB and became a company that operates in competition with other companies in a liberalized market. In addition, when the portion snus is introduced, the snus – partly – changes shape again. Shortly after the tobacco monopoly expired, Svenska Tobaks AB (now Swedish Match) launched the round box we now associate with snuff. This was during a period when the snuff had been skipped by the cigarettes. The cigarette had already become a status marker, a symbol of youth and success during the interwar period, while the snuff in its oval cardboard box was considered obsolete. With the help of the round boxes, the snuff is once again accepted among the wider mass and all of a sudden the snuff box is an asset that you can find in the pocket of both workers and officials. Baking their own prilla is a craft, and for those who were not used to it, it felt complicated and unexpected. The snuff consequently got a boost in the 70s when the portion snus came. Three Anchors was first out and helped to broaden the use of snuff. In the 80s came Catch, the first flavored snuff. After many trips and change of ownership, in 1994 a group was formed in which production of tobacco, matches and lighters was included. The match company was previously named Swedish Match, and the English name for the match became the name for the entire company. Now the state had sold all its shares in the company.
