One can be said to be the first modern snuff. In the early 1800s, snus was produced by fermenting tobacco at elevated temperatures for up to six months. Jacob Fredrik Ljunglöf had a theory: if tobacco could be processed without fermentation, it would both taste better and could be produced more efficiently. He turned to his friend the chemist Jacob Berzelius for advice. Together, they created a new method for producing snus, using tobacco, salt, water and pot ash. Instead of having to be prepared for months, a batch of snus could now be completed in a week. [4] Both the new production method and the success of the recipe for Ljunglöfs No. 1. helped build Jacob Fredrik Ljunglöf’s fortune. When he died in 1860 he was one of Sweden’s richest men.

His son, Knut Ljunglöf, developed the Ettan brand and the factory so successfully that he became known as the “King of Snus”. Knut Ljunglöf won the reputation for being almost obsessed with the quality of the product. Every morning, a silver bowl of fresh snuff was placed on his desk. With a spoon, the manufacturer put a smell test in each nostril and sneezed into his handkerchief. In this way he had learned to determine the degree of humidity in the snuff and the quality of the tobacco. If the sample was approved, the snuff could be packaged and sold. If the message in the sample was not approved, the entire shipment was discarded. [2] Knut Ljunglöf became more successful in business than his father. His company grew into Europe’s largest producer of smokeless tobacco. At his death, he left behind one of Sweden’s greatest assets, SEK 16 million. Knut Ljunglöf also left a larger property north of Stockholm, popularly known as the Ljunglöfska Palace, because of its castle-like exterior. [5] In 1915, a tobacco monopoly was created in Sweden in order to finance Sweden’s defense force and the first public pension reform. The entire Swedish tobacco industry was incorporated into the newly formed company AB Swedish Tobacco Monopoly. To see his life work go out of his hands made Knut Ljunglöf a bitter man. In 1920 – five years after the business was monopolized – he passed away, 87 years old. [6] However, the Ettan brand lives on as one of the oldest brands for snus and one of the oldest Swedish brands regardless of category. In RÅ 1970 p.74, the Governmental Court (the current Supreme Administrative Court found that the Ljunglöfs brand was protected by incorporation, despite the fact that the term Ljunglöfs has not been used since the introduction of the tobacco monopoly. Ettan range Ettan is sold as loose snus (42 grams / box), portion snus (Ettan Original portion) and “White portion” (Ettan White portion).
